TOKYO (Kyodo) -- North Korea fired a projectile on Tuesday, the Japanese government said, with the launch of what could be a ballistic missile coming after state media last week reported the successful test of a newly developed hypersonic missile.
Japanese government sources said the projectile landed in the sea outside Japan's exclusive economic zone and there has been no report of damage to ships or aircraft.
South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said North Korea fired what appeared to be a land-based ballistic missile toward the Sea of Japan around 7:27 a.m.
Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said repeated projectile launches are regrettable and Japan will "strengthen monitoring" of North Korea's military activities.
He has instructed relevant ministers and officials to make utmost efforts to collect information on the launch while ensuring the safety of planes and vessels in and around Japan. He also asked them to be prepared to respond to any emergency.
