KAJANG: A male detainee who tried to escape after a Covid-19 screening at a clinic in Semenyih has been rearrested.

       Kajang OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Zaid Hassan said the incident occurred at about 11am on Tuesday (Jan 11) in front of the Beranang Health Clinic.

       "Police personnel escorted 19 detainees in a police lorry from Kajang police station to the clinic for swab tests.

       "After the screenings, all detainees were brought back to the lorry but one of them attempted to escape," he said in a statement on Wednesday (Jan 12).

       However, the detainee only managed to run for 50m before police personnel caught up with him, he added.

       "The detainee was initially arrested in connection with a theft case and was remanded until Thursday (Jan 13)," he said.

       For the attempted escape, ACP Mohd Zaid said police are investigating under Section 223 and 224 of the Penal Code.

       "We urge those with information on the incident to contact Kajang police at 03-8911 4222 or investigating officer Insp K. Suresh at 017-433 3795 or the nearest police station to assist in the probe," he said.

       A 38-second video of the incident had gone viral earlier Wednesday (Jan 12).
