PETALING JAYA: The High Court has overturned the sentencing of a teenager who attempted to steal from a donation box at a mosque in Rawang.
Instead of a 10-day jail term and a RM4,000 fine imposed by the Magistrate’s Court on 19-year-old Daniel Iskandar, who was bathed like a corpse before being handed to the police, Justice Abd Halim Aman commuted the sentence to 120 hours of community service over six months.
He said this was decided after hearing submissions from deputy public prosecutor Norhana Sahat.
Last Monday, a video of the youth being “bathed like a corpse” went viral after he was caught trying to steal from the donation box.
The act has left Malaysians divided, with some expressing support and others saying it was inappropriate to punish him in such a manner.Last Thursday, the teenager was slapped with a RM4,000 fine and a 10-day jail term. The punishment was meted out after he pleaded guilty to Magistrate Nik Mohd Fadli Anik Azlan.
