GEORGE TOWN: Former DAP strongman Datuk Danny Law, who quit the party he had been with for over 30 years, has caused a shockwave in the state political arena.

       Speculation is rife that the former state executive councillor is on the brink of joining Parti Warisan, which recently spread its wings to Peninsular Malaysia.

       State Warisan coordinator Goh Choon Keong said he had not received any official application from Law to join the party.

       Goh, the former Balik Pulau DAP division chief, admitted meeting Law but said he had yet to apply to join Warisan.

       It is learned that Law was unhappy with not being picked as a candidate during the last general election in 2018.

       Batu Kawan DAP secretary David Marshel expressed shock at Law’s resignation and said he was baffled by his resignation.

       “He was a veteran of the party for more than 30 years, and to quit suddenly from the party is shocking for most of us,” he said.

       David urged the party to conduct an investigation to find out why Law resorted to this action.

       He also described Law’s resignation as a big loss to the party.

       Law was fondly remembered as the “Lone Ranger” when he was the only DAP assemblyman after the general election in 1999.

       Earlier on Tuesday (Jan 18), state DAP secretary Lim Hui Ying said they had received Law’s resignation letter dated Jan 18.

       “The state committee respects his decision and thanks him for his service,” she said in a statement on Tuesday (Jan 18).

       Lim, however, did not disclose the reason for Law’s resignation.

       Law was appointed as the state tourism committee chairman in 2008 and kept the position until 2018.

       He was Batu Lanchang assemblyman from 1999 to 2004 and again in 2008.

       He held the seat until 2018 but was not picked as a candidate in that year’s general election.
