KOTA KINABALU: Two plantation workers were killed when the motorcycle they were riding was rear-ended by a four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicle at KM60 of the Kunak-Tawau road.

The motorcyclist, Usman Jamal, 30, died on the spot after he was thrown more than 200m away from the point of collision while 16-year-old pillion rider Aziz Samsuddin died at the Tawau hospital at 4.20am Saturday (Jan 22) following the accident that occurred during heavy rains at about 7.15pm on Friday (Jan 21).

Both were killed while returning from buying groceries.

Tawau OCPD Asst Comm Peter Umbuas said police had arrested a 44-year company manager who was driving the 4WD after he surrendered himself at about 1.25am Saturday. He was detained for further questioning.

ACP Peter said that the driver of the 4WD claimed he did not see the motorcycle as it was raining heavily and the road was not lit.

He said police do not suspect the driver of being under the influence of alcohol but have taken blood samples for tests.

The case is being investigated for reckless driving under Section 4(1) Road Transport Act 1987.
