JOHOR BARU: The official announcement of the Johor State Assembly's dissolution will be made on Sunday (Jan 23), says speaker Suhaizan Kayat.

       He said that Johor's Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar had agreed to dissolve the Johor State Assembly.

       “I will get the instrument of dissolution on Sunday once I get to my office in Kota Iskandar.

       “I only found out about the matter through the media,” he said when contacted here on Saturday (Jan 22).

       “However, the state assembly was dissolved today when His Majesty signed the instrument,” he added.

       Following the dissolution of the Johor state assembly, the state will have to hold a snap election within 60 days.

       The previous Umno-led government had a simple majority of 28 seats against Pakatan Harapan’s 27, with one seat left vacant after the passing of Kempas assemblyman and former mentri besar Datuk Osman Sapian on Dec 21.

       The now-dissolved state government comprised Umno (14), MIC (two), PAS (one) and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (11), while the opposition comprises DAP (14), Amanah (six) and PKR (seven).
