       How you water your plants can have a major effect on their lifespan, so it's important to get it just right. So how often and how much do you need to do it?

       Depending what kind of plants you have - indoor and out - the recommended watering amount can vary.

       But at the very least it should be once a week.

       The size, species, structure and seasons can all impact the growth of your plants, so it is important to understand the individual needs of each.

       As a general guideline, plants should be watered when the soil feels dry to the touch.

       Do my plants needs watering everyday?

       There is no cut and dry rule of thumb for watering plants everyday, as each species has different needs.

       They also use more water when more is available to them, meaning they need time to dry off in between showers.

       The Royal Horticultural Society advises watering your plants in the mornings if possible, as this is when the sun comes up and plants begin to use water.

       As well as researching your specific plants, there are some simple signs to help determine when they need more water.

       If there is a less than expected growth, or the plant and its leaves have become tired-looking, this could be a sign it is dehydrated.

       Leaves angling downwards or curling, wilting and powdery mildew can also all be signs your plant needs more water.

       Watering less frequently but more thoroughly is a recommended technique to give plants their fill, while making sure they are evenly moist.

       Stave off mould by keeping the leaves dry and watering with a target - but switch up which side you pour from and alternate positions.

       How much water does a plant need everyday?

       Different plants need different amounts of water everyday to aid its growth.

       But as well as the shrubs individual needs, it is important to take into consideration the type of soil used and where the plant is housed.

       Light soils need watering more frequently but with less water, while heavier clay-based soils can be watered more sporadically but with larger amounts.

       Plant soil rich in minerals has superior expansion properties which allows it to hold water in a better and more evenly distributed way.

       The RHS suggest adding 10 per cent of the volume of its container when the plant is potted.

       A US study published in Greenhouse Management magazine found that small plants used 1 tablespoon of water per day, while large ones used slightly less than 2 tablespoons each day.
