THREE police officers could be prosecuted for sending “inappropriate messages” during the probe into the murder of Sarah Everard.

Sarah, 33, was strangled to death by serving Met cop Wayne Couzens, who abducted and strangled her to death on March 3 last year.

It's thought two serving Met officers and one former Met officer will be quizzed about messages sent during her case - and other messages exchanged in 2019 before her murder.

The IOPC has asked the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) to consider potential charges.

A spokesman said: “Our investigation into sending & sharing of inappropriate messages by officers on WhatsApp has been completed.

“We provided a file of evidence to the CPS in December to consider potential offences against 3 individuals… We await its decision.”

The Government has already been conducting a review of culture and standards in the London police force in the wake of Ms Everard's death.

Ex Met Police chief Cressida Dick was slammed after cold-blooded Couzens kidnapped, raped and murdered Sarah on her watch.

And tonight she sensationally resigned after facing an avalanche of criticism over her handling of a string of scandals.

These include Sarah's case, horrific WhatsApp messages sent by officers in her force, and the actions of vile officers who took photos of murdered sisters Bibaa Henry and Nicole Smallman.

Last week a report by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) revealed highly offensive language used by officers in a now-disbanded team based in Westminster, primarily at Charing Cross police station.

The bombshell report found that police in London joked about raping women in sick WhatsApp chats.

The messages included one officer being dubbed "mcrapey raperson" and multiple other references to sexual violence including: "I would happily rape you."

In another disturbing exchange, a cop sickeningly boasts about domestic violence saying "knock a bird about and she will love you" adding they are "biologically programmed to like that s***".

The language was largely dismissed as "banter" to hide the bullying and harassment, meaning other officers felt unable to raise concerns.

Some 14 officers were investigated as a result of the vile WhatsApp messages, with two found to have a case to answer for gross misconduct.

One was sacked and another resigned before he would have been dismissed.

Nine remain serving officers, while another is working as a contractor in a staff role.

The Metropolitan Police has been contacted for comment.
