DAP's performance in Penang comes into question amid campaigning for Johor polls

GEORGE TOWN: As campaigning for the Johor polls heats up, Penang MCA has entered the fray to lend its weight to its Johor counterpart.

Its secretary Yeoh Chin Kah claimed that it's not all rosy in Penang as painted by some DAP politicians in their campaign trails in Johor.

"Johor voters should look at DAP's 14 years' performance in Penang before voting.

"There were some projects which were either delayed or not carried out as planned," he said.

In a press conference at the Penang MCA headquarters in Transfer Road on Tuesday (March 8), Yeoh alleged that some of the projects did not materialise or were not carried out as planned in Penang.

Among them was the proposed RM6.3bil Penang Undersea Tunnel, which was first announced in 2011.

"Up until now, we have not heard about the feasibility studies of the tunnel.

"Then there is the RM8.5mil Penang Free WiFi initiative, which was discontinued in 2019.

"It was ridiculed by domestic and foreign tourists. The plan failed.

"Launched in 2009, Penang Free WiFi was a component of the Wireless@Penang project, a move to transform Penang into international city status," he said.

Yeoh also pointed out that the Pakatan Harapan-led Penang government did not fulfil its toll-free pledges although the coalition was once in power at the federal level.

Among them was to abolish toll collection at Penang Bridge and Sungai Nyior toll plaza in Butterworth.

"And what has happened to the Business Processing Outsourcing Prime (BPO Prime) and the Penang International Technology Park (PITP) projects, both with a total gross development value of RM11.3bil?

"It's supposed to turn Penang into an international ‘outsourcing’ hub.

"Not to forget, there was also the 'King of Tennis' fiasco, the proposed 'tiger park' in Relau, crocodile farm, Komtar Walk and a few others.

"The projects were either merely talk or had failed or were cancelled. They can't even take good care of the water lilies in the pond in Penang Botanic Gardens," he said.

Meanwhile, in another press conference earlier, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said Pakatan would unveil its four-year achievements in the state based on the coalition's electoral manifesto in the 2018 general election.

He said the report card would be made public in a ceremony on May 9 this year to mark four years of Pakatan under his rule.
