JOHOR BARU: The Johor state assembly was dissolved because Barisan Nasional wanted to strengthen its position as the coalition is still facing internal friction with the Perikatan Nasional-led Federal Government, claims Johor PKR.
Its chairman Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh (pic) was referring to a remark made by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who said on Sunday (March 6), that Barisan was aiming to achieve a two-thirds majority in the state assembly after the conclusion of the state polls on March 12.
"With that statement (by Ismail Sabri), the motive of calling the state election is clear and that is to strengthen Umno and Barisan’s positions while they are facing an internal struggle between them and Perikatan Nasional, which also includes PAS," said Syed Ibrahim.
In a statement on Monday (March 7), Syed Ibrahim said the state election wasn't called to ensure political stability.
"It is to strengthen their powers in the state," added Syed Ibrahim.
Syed Ibrahim said if Barisan wins handsomely with a two-thirds majority, the effect of its victory will carry forward to the 15th General Election.
Syed Ibrahim urged Johor voters, especially first-time voters, to evaluate each election candidate wisely before casting their ballot on March 12.
"Reject candidates who only prioritise powers and the interests of political elites, over the suffering of the people," added Syed Ibrahim.
In the Melaka election last November, Barisan secured a two-thirds majority after winning 21 out of the 28 state seats it contested.
