Ukraine's President Zelensky receives standing ovation from House of Commons
The Kremlin has claimed its war in Ukraine is “going to plan”, despite western intelligence reports suggesting its troops are failing to make “significant breakthroughs”.
Two weeks after Vladimir Putin invaded his neighbour, Russia is struggling to make inroads in fighting north of Kyiv, the British Ministry of Defence said on Wednesday.
This comes as military experts said Russian troops stuck in a stationary 40-mile convoy to the north of the capital may have to abandon their positions, as Arctic winds turn their iron tanks into “40-ton freezers”.
In the first 14 days of the war, hundreds of civilians have been killed in Russian shelling of cities including Kharkiv and Mariupol, with thousands of vulnerable people unable to escape the constant shelling.
The Kremlin has promised to stop its attacks from 7am GMT on Wednesday to respect humanitarian corridors from the cities of Kyiv, Chernihiv, Sumi, Kharkiv and Mariupol. It has made similar - but unfulfilled - pledges in recent days.
