KOTA KINABALU: Police have arrested six people who were allegedly involved in a fight using weapons in Tawau's Kampung Kurnia Jaya.
Tawau district police chief Asst Comm Jasmin Hussin said that they were still tracking others involved in the incident, footage of which was widely shared on social media.
He said on Monday (March 21) that those arrested comprised four local men and two foreigners aged between 20 and 70, including three who were injured.
Initial investigations revealed that the incident was due to a misunderstanding about repair of a bridge in the area which burnt down, he said.
He said the five suspects have been remanded for four days and another for one day.
The case is being investigated for possession of weapons during a riot under Section 148 of the Penal Code which provides for imprisonment of up to five years, or a fine, or both.
Police are also investigating a few suspects under the Immigration Act.
ACP Jasmin urged the public not to share unverified information on social media as it may interfere with the police investigation.
