POLICE are still investigating Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki’s share trading case, says Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin.

The Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department said investigations were still ongoing despite the Securities Commission (SC) closing the case and finding no wrongdoing in relation to the shares registered under Azam’s name.

Mas Ermieyati said Azam’s case was also discussed in a meeting by the Anti-Corruption Advisory Board and the Complaints Committee.

“The investigation by the SC was completed and it found no wrongdoing on shares registered in his name in 2012 and 2016, based on the documents reviewed during the probe.

“The police are also conducting an investigation into the case as per the parliamentary answer given by the Home Minister on March 7.

“A meeting by the Anti-Corruption Advisory Board and the Complaints Committee had also discussed the case,” she said during the Question and Answer session at the Dewan Rakyat yesterday.

Mas Ermieyati said the advisory board and the committee were among the five external oversight bodies that have been acting as a check and balance mechanism to monitor MACC’s roles and functions since 2009.

Other bodies included the Special Committee on Corruption, the Consultation and Corruption Prevention Panel and the Operations Review Panel.

“Each of these committees have their respective terms of reference that function as the check and balance mechanism,” Mas Ermieyati added.

Earlier, Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub (PH-Pulai) asked the Prime Minister to state proactive measures by the government to enhance the credibility of the MACC in dealing with increasingly critical corruption cases.

He also wanted to know the steps taken by the government on Azam’s case.

Azam is being investigated for allowing his brother to use his share-trading account and has been summoned by a Parliamentary Select Committee over the same issue.

On Jan 5, Azam maintained that he did not commit any wrongdoing, adding that the shares were bought in the open market and were financed by his brother.

On Jan 19, the SC announced that it had arrived at a decision that there was no breach of Section 25(4) of the Securities Industry (Central Depositories) Act.
