KUALA LUMPUR: While Malaysia and Singapore have agreed to open their land borders with each other, discussions on land travel with the governments of Thailand, Brunei and Indonesia have yet to be finalised.

Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said at present, Malaysia and Thailand have only managed to agree to allow travelling from the Bukit Kayu Hitam-Sadao and Wang Kelian-Wang Prachan borders in Kedah and Perlis.

“For the early stage, only these two borders will be reopened from April 1. As of now, the Thai government is only ready to receive tourists only.

“As for daily and frequent commuters, discussions between the two countries are still ongoing.

“For now, the general protocols for travellers entering Malaysia will apply for those arriving in the country from Thailand,” said Khairy at a press conference in Parliament.

Khairy said Brunei and Indonesia, which also have land borders with Malaysia, have yet to come up with an agreement on land travel.

“We have already submitted our proposed protocols for travellers entering into Malaysia. They are still looking into it.

“Whatever decision needs to be reciprocal,” said Khairy.

Malaysia and Singapore have announced that land travel for all categories of travellers and mode of transport will be allowed between the two countries from April 1.

Those who are fully vaccinated will not need to undergo quarantine or Covid-19 tests when crossing borders.
