The mum and baby were found unresponsive in one of the hotel's 67 rooms just before 3pm.

Several ambulances and emergency services rushed to the scene at the Haymarket Shopping Centre yesterday.

After the alarm was raised by staff at the hotel, the mum and newborn were taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary.

But despite the best efforts of paramedics and doctors, the tragic tot and mum were sadly pronounced dead soon after their arrival.

An investigation has now been launched into the heartbreaking double death - but police confirmed it's not being treated as suspicious.

One witness said that he had been in the city centre when he saw the desperate fight to save the mother and baby.

He said people were administering CPR to both of them on the rooftop car park.

The man told LeicestershireLive: "It has to be the most heartbreaking thing I've ever seen.

"There were paramedics running up the ramp of the multi-storey car park.

"I realised it was because the ambulances couldn't get to the rooftop and were still down in the street.

"Not long afterwards, I saw a woman being brought out of the hotel on an ambulance trolley.

"Behind her, medics were carrying out a baby.

       DOUBLE DEATH

"I then noticed that the paramedics were administering CPR to the woman - and soon realised they were doing the same to the baby.

"They were trying to save their lives as we all stood there powerless to help. It was absolutely gut-wrenching."

Leicestershire Police said: "Officers were called by East Midlands Ambulance Service shortly before 3pm yesterday afternoon (March 24) to a hotel in the Haymarket Shopping Centre, Leicester.

"The call was made following a newborn baby, who had just been delivered in a hotel room, and that the mother and child were unresponsive.
