UKRAINE is ready to deploy baguette-sized Switchblade flying bombs that fit in a backpack to rain death on Russian tanks.

       The weapon, controlled from a tablet, can scout out targets over enemy lines to hit battlefield command and control headquarters.

       US President Joe Biden agreed to give Ukraine 100 Switchblades for around ￡600million.

       The devices fly at around 60mph for up to 15 minutes using a camera relaying video of the terrain, before accelerating to 100mph when its remote pilot locks onto a target.

       Military analysts say it gives Ukraine major advantages by providing surveillance and reconnaissance intelligence.

       They weigh about 2.5kg and are much lighter than the 20kg Javelin anti-tank missiles already used, which America also supplied.

       Switchblades are incapable of attacking tanks but experts say their precision mean high-profile targets can be hit.

       They include artillery, headquarters and command vehicles of artillery units.

       Attacks can also be called off and flown back into the sky if an error was made in identifying the target.

       The weapons have also led to claims that Ukraine is winning the UAV arms race.

       And it has increased the threat to high profile Russian generals, many of whom are thought to already have been killed by Ukraine.

       It comes after a Russian soldier surrendered with a tank in return for ￡7,500 and Ukrainian citizenship.

       The man, named only as Misha, waved the white flag and begged to switch sides after military colleagues ran away and his commander threatened to shoot him.

       Viktor Andrusiv, an adviser to the head of Ukraine’s interior ministry, claimed Misha saw “no point in further fighting” and was afraid to return home.

       It is the latest embarrassment to Moscow amid widespread dismay at the targeting of Ukraine civilians.

       As the fighting takes its toll on Russian troops, stories are beginning to emerge of anger and plummeting morale.

       And humiliated Putin is said to be facing defeat in Kyiv as Ukrainian troops fought yesterday fought to retake Kherson - the first of Russia's gains.
