JOHOR BARU: A video of a man who died after being stabbed and run over by a car at a petrol station here on Dec 17, 2017, has gone viral.

Johor police chief Comm Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat denied the incident took place recently, as the old video of the incident was making its rounds again.

He said a Facebook account holder had uploaded the one-minute and 24-second video of a group of men knocking another man down at the petrol station.

After hitting the victim, a car slammed into reverse and appeared to crush the victim.

"Upon investigation, we found that it was an old video taken in December 2017," Comm Kamarul said in a statement.

He said the then Johor police chief Comm Datuk Mohd Khalil Kader Mohd had issued a media statement regarding the case.

Comm Kamarul said those involved in the case had already been arrested and charged in December that year under Section 302 of the Penal Code read together with Section 109 of the and same Act which provides for the death penalty upon conviction.

Comm Kamarul said the act of spreading and making false speculation was illegal and those caught could be prosecuted under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1988.

He said those convicted of the offence may be fined not more than RM50,000 or imprisoned for one year or both.

Comm Kamarul advised the public not to easily believe unverified sources and to not abuse social media.
