IPOH: Creating awareness on proper disposal of electronic waste via khutbah (sermon) at mosques is being considered by the Perak government, says exco member Mohd Akmal Kamaruddin.
"It would be similar to how we created awareness among the people to get the Covid-19 vaccine and booster shot," the state environment committee chairman told a press conference after the soft launch of the state-level National Environment Day at DR Seenivasagam Park here on Friday (April 22).
"We will try and get the Perak Islamic Religious Department to include in sermons the message to dispose of ewaste properly.
"Other methods to spread awareness would be through the radio, mainstream media and social media.
"We are also working closely with local councils and other relevant agencies to promote (safe disposal)," he added.
Mohd Akmal said the disposal of ewaste in the state was still under control and the Environment Department was monitoring the situation.
"For factories, we have (relevant) laws and Acts to take action.
"We have already acted against two (ewaste) factories in the state for air pollution and for not properly disposing of the ewaste," he said.
When asked if action would be taken against individuals found to be disposing of ewaste illegally, Mohd Akmal said there were currently no enactments or laws covering that.
"If they are caught, we will just advise them.
"We do hope for cooperation from the general public to properly dispose of their unwanted electronic and electrical items," he said.
