NEW YORK, April 22 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. dollar rose noticeably in late trading on Friday as market participants bet on aggressive monetary policy tightening by the Federal Reserve to curb inflation.

       The dollar index, which measures the greenback against six major peers, jumped 0.64 percent at 101.2200.

       In late New York trading, the euro was down to 1.0789 U.S. dollars from 1.0841 dollars in the previous session, and the British pound decreased to 1.2825 dollars from 1.3028 U.S. dollars in the previous session. The Australian dollar decreased to 0.7239 U.S. dollar from 0.7369 dollar.

       The U.S. dollar bought 128.59 Japanese yen, higher than 128.27 Japanese yen of the previous session. The U.S. dollar rose to 0.9568 Swiss franc from 0.9531 Swiss franc, and it was up to 1.2717 Canadian dollars from 1.2582 Canadian dollars.

       The above market reactions came after Fed Chair Jerome Powell on Thursday affirmed the U.S. central bank's determination to bring down inflation, indicating that a half percentage point rate hike is possible at the Fed's meeting next month.
