KUCHING: Police will seek Interpol’s assistance to trace six Sarawakians said to be victims of a job scam in Cambodia.
Sarawak police commissioner Comm Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri said the families of the victims lodged police reports on April 20 and 22, claiming that they had been duped into working in Cambodia.
“Initial investigations found that the victims were offered attractive jobs in Cambodia by employment agents.
“They realised they had been duped when they were forced to do phone scams,” he said at a press conference at state police headquarters here on Monday (April 25).
Comm Mohd Azman said the victims, all men aged from 19 to 39 years, were from Kuching and Padawan.
He said the state commercial crimes investigation department (CCID) had opened two investigation papers on cheating in relation to the case.
“Bukit Aman CCID will work with Interpol to trace the victims in Cambodia and take action against the employment agents involved,” he said.
Comm Mohd Azman also advised the public not to be duped by job ads offering lucrative pay on social media to avoid falling victim to job scam syndicates.
He said they could contact the CCID scam response centre at 03-2610 1559/1599 or the CCID infoline at 013-211 1222 (WhatsApp and SMS) to get advice or provide information on online crime.
