IPOH: Some 17 accident-prone “black spots" in Perak have been identified by police, says Comm Datuk Mior Faridalathrash Wahid (pic).

The Perak police chief said these are deadly accident-prone areas that the police would keep an eye on during Ops Selamat 18, which will be held from April 29 to May 8, to minimise road accidents.

Comm Mior Faridalathrash said these included five locations in Manjung, four in Taiping, four in Muallim and Gerik (three) and two in Hilir Perak.

"As we can see today, traffic on the (North-South) Expressway is starting to get heavy.

"A lot of Malaysians will either return to their hometown or travel in conjunction with the Hari Raya Aidilfitri holidays thus there will be a lot of cars on the road," he said in a press conference after launching Ops Selamat 18 at the Ipoh Selatan toll plaza here on Friday (April 29).

"The police will conduct various ways to deter accidents.

"These include mobile patrols, roadblocks, speed traps and traffic control," he said, adding that there were also 23 accident hot spots in the state.

Separately, Comm Mior Faridalathrash said the police would meet with all relevant agencies after the Hari Raya celebrations to decide whether the search operation for the two victims buried under rocks at a quarry in Simpang Pulai in March will go on.

He said there have been suggestions for the operation to be called off and all relevant agencies would meet to come up with the right decision.

"I understand the families of the victims will hope that we can continue.

"If we can provide explanations properly, I feel they will understand that we have been trying hard to locate the victims.

"We will try to complete our investigations as soon as possible so that the families can be issued the victims' death certificates," he added.

On March 8, two men, Kheow Loo Siew Soon, 49, and Itam Lasoh, 43, were buried under debris after a rockfall at the quarry.
