GEORGE TOWN: Penangites should continue wearing face masks and practise physical distancing – even when in open spaces – to keep themselves safe from Covid-19.

"The public is strongly encouraged to wear face masks in open and crowded areas, especially those at risk such as the elderly and children. In fact, the practice of physical distancing is also highly encouraged," said Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.

"As we know, face masks are likened to the 'last shield' in protecting ourselves from being infected with Covid-19," he said in a statement on Friday (April 29).

On Wednesday (April 27), the Health Ministry announced that face masks were no longer mandatory outdoors starting May 1.

However, its use remains compulsory when indoors and while using public transport.

Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said while face masks were no longer mandatory in outdoor spaces, the practice was highly encouraged as it could reduce the spread of Covid-19.
