KOTA KINABALU: A man from Bum-Bum Island was killed when a speedboat he was travelling in collided with a passenger boat in Sabah’s Semporna district.
Semporna OCPD Supt Mohd Farhan Lee said the victim, in his 50s, was in a speedboat that had no lights on when the accident happened at 7.20pm on Friday.
He fell into the sea after the collision with a passenger boat near the Balimbing Jetty, off Bum-Bum Island.
There were seven people in the passenger boat that was heading to Bum-Bum Island.
Supt Mohd Farhan said that after the collision, the boatman and some passengers jumped into the sea to retrieve the victim.
“They took him to hospital where he was pronounced dead about an hour later,” he said.
He said there were impact wounds on the victim’s body and arm.
The body has been sent to the Tawau Hospital for post-mortem while the boatman, in his 20s, has been remanded.
Supt Mohd Farhan reminded boat owners and operators to ensure safety features are observed and vessels are fully operational.
