KOTA KINABALU: Sabah recorded fewer deaths on the road during this year's Ops Selamat, held in conjunction with the Aidilfitri celebration, despite a 7% increase in the total number of traffic accidents.
There were 508 accidents, an increase over last year's 472, but only six fatalities against 14 in 2021.
Sabah police commissioner Datuk Idris Abdullah said that during the 10-day operation, which ended on Sunday (May 8), police also issued 6,376 summonses to motorists for various offences, compared to 16,969 summonses last year.
A total of RM65,300 in compounds was also collected during the period, while 33 arrests were made for offences under the Road Transport Act (30 cases), the Penal Code (two) and the National Registration Act (one), he said in a statement on Tuesday (May 10).
Although the operation had ended, he said police would continue with measures to reduce road accidents in the state. – Bernama
