PETALING JAYA: Despite being affected by the soaring price of goods and wheat flour shortage, a roti canai seller in Melaka has been selling his roti canai for just 50 sen a piece for the past 21 years.
He also maintains his RM1 price for roti telur and roti planta, according to a report by Malay daily, Sinar Harian, yesterday.
Mustafa Abd Latif, 58, said he started selling roti canai in 2001 with his wife Norlela Salleh, 51.
He said he would continue selling roti canai at this price for as long as possible, adding that his intention has always been to do business while giving alms.
Mustafa said that every day he would sell over 200 pieces of roti canai, with the number more than doubling to 500 on weekends and public holidays,
“On a normal day, I use about 10kg of flour and take two hours to make the dough.
“I will usually start doing that in the afternoon. The amount of flour increases to 20kg on weekends and public holidays,” he said when met by the daily at his stall in Bukit Pulau, Bukit Katil.
Mustafa, who was previously in the handicrafts sector, decided to make and sell roti canai with the help of his children.
He used to sell his roti canai in Banda Hilir before moving to Bukit Katil where he has been renting a piece of land for RM480 per month for the past 11 years.
Mustafa’s challenge at the moment is obtaining a supply of raw materials, especially flour.
“It’s hard to find the two brands of flour that I usually use now.
“It’s not that I don’t want to use other brands, but I prefer to use this flour to maintain the quality and ensure the roti canai is soft even when it’s cold,” he said.
