JOHOR BARU: Journalists should maintain a high standard of ethics and provide constructive criticism to aid nation-building, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

Paying tribute to media practitioners in conjunction with National Journalists Day, the Transport Minister said journalists are an important group that contributes to the country's development.

"They work tirelessly. While others enjoy time off with their families, they are on the ground reporting accurate and credible news to the public.

"A journalist should also continue his or her role of providing constructive criticism to build the nation and its people.

"At the same time, journalism ethics should be upheld in their reporting without twisting the facts or giving inaccurate interpretation.

"I wish all journalists good health and success. Happy National Journalists Day," said Dr Wee, who is also MCA president, in a Facebook post on Sunday (May 29).

May 29 was gazetted as National Journalists Day in conjunction with the publication of the first newspaper in Malaysia, Utusan Melayu, on May 29, 1939.

This year's celebration is themed "People's Voice, National Aspiration".
