PETALING JAYA: Langkawi is one of the most popular local tourism destinations and Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong has discussed various proposals to improve the transport sector in the island.

Dr Wee said the Transport Ministry has received a courtesy visit from a Langkawi delegation led by Langkawi District Officer Datuk Abdul Gafar Yahya at the Transport Ministry's office at Putrajaya on Tuesday (May 31) afternoon.

"In our meeting, we discussed many people's issues in Langkawi, specifically about the transport industry.

"Langkawi is among the most popular local tourism destinations that receives local and international tourists.

"The tourism sector in Langkawi is also the main pillar of the nation's economy that's currently recording a positive trend in terms of recovery," said Dr Wee in a Facebook posting (May 31).

Dr Wee also said transport modes such as ferries and the shipping industry involving the maritime industry were also the main topics in discussion.

He added that he received various proposals and inputs by the delegation to ensure that transport services, including jetties, are always improved for the comfort and safety of passengers in future.

Meanwhile, Dr Wee said other issues discussed involved the frequency of ferry services, 'ulat ticket' (touts), ferry passengers and counter amenities.

"The Transport Ministry will always provide necessary assistance under the ministry's jurisdiction on all issues that were raised for the interests of the people in Langkawi," he added.
