Boris Johnson won’t face leadership vote, says Dominic Raab

Cabinet minister Sajid Javid has admitted a vote of no-confidence in Boris Johnson’s leadership is “possible” amid speculation one could be triggered today.

The health secretary said he was unaware whether the required rebel threshold of 54 votes had been reached, but pointed to a number of colleagues who had gone public.

“If 54 letters are reached I’m sure a vote will be called. I do think it’s possible, but I don’t know,” Mr Javid said speaking to Sky News.

He added: “This country doesn’t need a vote of no confidence in the prime minister.”

Almost 30 Tory MPs have publicly urged the prime minister to resign amid the fallout from revelations about Downing Street parties held during the lockdown.

But reports have suggested more MPs privately want him to go and that enough letters demanding a confidence vote have been submitted to trigger such a showdown.

Health minister Sajid Javid said it’s possible for the threshold of letters to be submitted to trigger a confidence vote.

Mr Javid said although he believes the country “does not need” a no-confidence vote in Boris Johnson but admitted it is possible the 54 letters submitted to Sir Graham Brady could be reached.

When asked about the possibility of a vote as pressure from backbench rebels grow, Mr Javid told Sky News: “I don’t know that’s the honest answer, no one knows at this point except my colleague Sir Graham Brady. We know a number of colleagues have gone pubic asking for such a vote.”

       “I do think it’s possible but I don’t know.”

1654495805 No way Jeremy Corbyn should be allowed to be a Labour MP again – Alan Johnson

“Sanctimonious” Jeremy Corbyn should not have the Labour whip reinstated in order to prevent him from “infiltrating” the party with his far-left views, according to a former cabinet minister.

Alan Johnson, a former home secretary and vocal critic of former leader Mr Corbyn, said those with far-left views needed to “stand on their beliefs” and “not try and infiltrate the Labour Party”.

1654493432 Poll predicts heavy Tory by-election loss

The Conservatives are in for a crushing defeat in the Wakefield by-election according to new polling, as reports suggest Boris Johnson could face a vote on his future.

The prime minister secured his majority of 80 seats at the 2019 general election off the back of scalps in the so-called red wall – traditional Labour-supporting areas in the north of England, the Midlands and Wales.

But with Wakefield scheduled to go to the polls on 23 June to elect a new MP after former Tory incumbent Imran Ahmad Khan was found guilty of sexual assault, fresh polling is likely to make for worrying reading in the Conservative Campaign Headquarters.

“While I may not have attended every event in person, my heart has been with you all; and I remain committed to serving you to the best of my ability, supported by my family,” the Queen said in her statement.

1654490426 Secret rebellion by disgruntled ministers could bring Johnson down, Tory critics believe

A secret rebellion by disgruntled government ministers could finish off Boris Johnson as Conservative leader, Tory MPs plotting his ejection believe.

The prime minister could face a no-confidence vote as early as this week, in which he would need the support of 180 Tory MPs – half of the current total of 359 – in order to hold on to his job.

Backers have suggested that he is all but certain to win any ballot, as the “payroll vote” of 173 ministers and parliamentary aides is almost enough to get him past the threshold.

But one backbencher, who has called for Mr Johnson’s resignation, told The Independent that the PM cannot take the votes of members of his own government for granted.

1654489233 Johnson may not face no-confidence vote, says Shapps

Transport secretary Grant Shapps said he does not believe Boris Johnson will face a confidence vote this week, but were there to be one the prime minister would win.

Mr Shapps also dismissed the mixed reception received by Mr Johnson as he attended a service at St Paul’s Cathedral on Friday, where boos could be heard from the crowd.

The Transport Secretary noted there were also cheers for the prime minister and said “politicians don’t expect to be popular all the time”, arguing “it’s best to get on with running the country “rather than being overly distracted” by the incident.
