SEREMBAN: A 26-year-old research officer pleaded not guilty at the Special Traffic Court here to a charge of reckless and dangerous driving that caused the death of a 72-year-old cyclist.

       Munirah Stapah@Salleh claimed trial after the charge was read to her before Magistrate Intan Syafinaz Roslin.

       She was charged with committing the offence at around 8.25am along Jalan Temiang-Pantai on June 1.

       Munirah was charged under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

       Offenders can be fined between RM20,000 and RM50,000 and jailed between five and 10 years upon conviction.

       Prosecuting officer ASP M. Shanmugavel then asked the court to set bail at RM5,000 and to suspend the driving licence of the accused until the case is over.

       Munirah, who works for a government-linked company, appealed for a lower bail as she had to provide for her family.

       She also told the court that her husband works in another state and that she was still nursing a young child.

       Intan Syafinaz then set bail at RM3,500 with one surety and suspended her driving licence.

       She also fixed June 21 for re-mention and to allow the accused to appoint a lawyer.
