JOHOR BARU: MCA would take on a more holistic approach in reaching out to voters for the upcoming general election, says its president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.
He said instead of focusing on specific seats, MCA would adopt a different strategy where all divisions, especially those in urban areas, combine efforts to reach out to all voters, he said.
"For parliamentary seats in urban areas, it may be challenging reaching out to voters and we need to change our strategy.
"Many residents may have moved without changing their address on their MyKad," he said, adding that they may not be residing in the same constituency where they are registered to vote.
"Taking this situation into consideration, we need to have a holistic approach, including having all MCA divisions under the Southern Johor region to work together instead of having the divisions focusing solely on their respective localities," he said in a press conference after officiating the Johor Baru MCA division annual general assembly at Taman Sentosa here on Saturday (June 11).
Dr Wee noted that the situation might not be the same for rural areas where the majority of the residents reside in their voting districts.
"We can no longer look at it from a seat-by-seat perspective but rather synergise the divisions in order to get the best outcome," he said.
During the Johor state election, MCA won four out of the 15 seats it contested.
On another matter, Dr Wee said that MCA had suggested that the state assembly propose Johor MCA deputy chairman Datuk Lim Pay Hen to be nominated a candidate for senatorship.
"We have made the proposal to the state assembly and we await their decision in the next state assembly sitting," he said.
