KUWAIT CITY, March 15: The Public Works Authority revealed that it had addressed the Ministry of Finance to request the allocation of 20 million dinars for the management, operation and maintenance of the Jaber Al-Ahmad Bridge – Doha and Subbiya links – as part of the budget for the current fiscal 2022-2023 as a total estimated value of the contract, which is expected to extend over 5 years, reports Al-Qabas daily. In this regard sources said the Ministry of Finance has asked the Works Authority to provide it with full details of the works included in the contract, and the basis applied for estimating the cost of those works before it proceeds to sign the contract.

The sources said that the ministry had previously received in 2019 an initial approval from the Central Agency for Public Tenders to contract directly with Hyundai to maintain and operate the bridge, but the Works Authority has not completed the contracting procedures since then, despite the importance of having a contract for the maintenance and operation of the project, whose implementation cost 738 million dinars. It is the fourth longest bridge in the world, and is a major part of the plans to establish and develop the economic zone in the north of the country.

The sources indicated that the scope of work of the new contract includes marine dredging to the southern and northern parts of the islands, and periodic control of all structural elements of the sea and land bridges and the suspension bridge. The sources stated that the works will also include maintenance of sewage networks and rainwater drainage systems distributed on the two islands, as well as management and maintenance of buildings, electricity, air conditioning, cleaning and landscaping, as well as periodic cleaning of bridge and road surfaces.
