PETALING JAYA: Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) has brushed off calls to lodge a police report on a racial slur made by former Kota Anggerik assemblyman Najwan Halimi.

“Many people are asking PSM to lodge a police report against@NajwanHalimi for his racist comment but we just don't want to burden the police who have so many other things to do,” Arulchelvan said.

"We also have other more important work to do, like building a nation based on unity, respect and equality,” he added.

Najwan - who is the Shah Alam PKR deputy chief - has since apologised and has taken full responsibility for his remarks.

Meanwhile, Indian politicians have also denounced the remarks.

Najwan’s party colleague and PKR’s Batu MP P. Prabakaran said in a tweet, “You have disgraced the party's reputation. Shame on you.”

Similarly, Selangor Muda deputy president Dr R. Siva Prakash demanded an immediate response from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

In his apology tweet, Najwan said he will be careful with his statements in the future.

“I apologise to all parties who may have been hurt and will be more careful in making any statements in the future,” Najwan added.

He also said that such incidents would not be repeated.
