THE Indian community in Tapah, Perak, is urging authorities to address the issue of a foul-smelling sewage treatment plant situated adjacent to a primary school, reported Malaysia Nanban.

An activist, Appalasamy, expressed that the three-storey SJK (T) Tapah holds great significance and is a source of pride for the Indian community.

He said the sewage treatment plant frequently released foul-smelling waste into a drain in front of the school.

The community, he said, had been demanding for the plant to be relocated or for the discharge to be diverted, but no action had been taken.

       > The Tamil daily also reported that a wedding in India had to be postponed because the village chief was not there to hand over the thaali as per village custom.

The wedding between the chief’s nephew and a local girl was to have taken place at the Vellaikkal mountain village in Tamil Nadu’s Velore district.

However, village chief Shankar, who had gone to a nearby town to buy items for the wedding was detained by police who accused him of reeking of alcohol.

Because the arrest was made over the weekend, Shankar could not make bail.
