JOHOR BARU: The number of cumulative dengue cases in Johor saw a large increase as of epidemiological week 28 (ME28) with 5,139 cases so far this year against 1,329 cases in the corresponding period last year.

State health and unity committee chairman Ling Tian Soon said 2,023 (39.4%) were epidemic locality cases while 3,116 (60.6%) were non-epidemic locality cases.

“ME28 recorded a decline in new dengue cases with 256 cases as of Tuesday (July 18) against 274 cases in ME27," he said in a statement on Tuesday (July 18).

He said Johor Baru district saw the most cases with 199, followed by Kluang (12), Kulai (11), Segamat (nine), Tangkak and Kota Tinggi with eight cases each, Muar (three), and Batu Pahat, Mersing and Pontian with two cases each.

Ling said the number of cumulative epidemic localities this year as of ME28 (ending July 15) was 638 against 129 recorded in the corresponding period last year.

He added there were eight cumulative deaths from ME01 to ME27 this year compared with one death in the corresponding period last year.

“We have issued 3,239 compound notices totalling RM1.6mil so far this year to premises owners found to have breeding places for Aedes mosquitoes and 64% of them paid the fines," said Ling.
