RESIDENTS are fighting plans to build ANOTHER pub in their town saying it's the last thing they need.

       Gary Longworth has applied for permission from Denbighshire County Council to change the use of the shop at 39 Wellington Road in Rhyl, North Wales, to a gallery and music bar.

       Planning officers are recommending councillors approve the plans with conditions, although a final decision is still pending.

       However, disgruntled locals have sent letters of objection to the council's planning department.

       Members of The Salvation Army charity have also raised complaints about the music bar being located near to a church.

       Alan Rosenwould wrote: "Many of the people who make use of the facilities at The Salvation Army are vulnerable and are battling addictions.

       "The last thing these people need is a bar/pub next door. Surely there are enough pubs and clubs in the town already."

       Sam Davidson said: "A terrible location to put a bar next to a place of worship and a place where help is given to those struggling with addictions."

       "As a member of The Salvation Army, I am totally against this application for yet another pub/bar in the town, especially when it is in such close proximity to our church building," Diane Selby added.

       "We work alongside several organisations to help those who are struggling with addiction and need help getting themselves back on the right track.

       "Yet another drinking establishment, of which there are many in Rhyl, would only exacerbate an already big problem with alcohol and substance abuse."

       The proposal will be debated by Denbighshire's planning committee tomorrow.

       Mr Longworth said: "I totally understand and do sympathise with people battling addiction.

       "I personally go for a beer in Rhyl quite often and visit many pubs. I have seen lots of vulnerable people visiting the Salvation Army, but never anybody actually in the pubs themselves.

       "It's a gallery bar with many paintings on display by my late father which are not for sale.

       "The alcohol side is an income to keep the bar running. I will be promoting creative arts.

       "If somebody wants to come in and recite their own poem, play their own song, do a dance, play the flute, or anything like that, I will give them the platform to do it."

       A spokesperson for Denbighshire County Council said: "The application will go before the Council's planning committee this Wednesday (July 19) for a final decision."
