England’s newest small town may only be six years old, but already it is coming under fire.

Northstowe, Cambridgeshire, was constructed for thousands of residents and despite families moving into an area full of homes, there are still no shops, no cafes, and no GP surgery.

The area, which was described as the largest new town since Milton Keynes was developed back in 1967, is just 10 miles north of Cambridge.

However, since moving in, residents have blasted developers, claiming they effectively live in a ghost town.

Since construction began, around 1,200 new homes have been built with developers L&Q Estates aiming for a population of around 26,000 to help ease the housing crisis in the area.

There are plans for around 10,000 homes to be built by the time the project is finished, but residents are being left frustrated that the area has no amenities.

Northstowe reportedly has no shops, pubs, cafes, and no GP practice.

Instead, residents have to travel out of the area for the most basic of errands.

Residents who moved in six years ago believing the infrastructure would come are fearful it may never happen.

Speaking to the Mail Online, Dan Greef, 42, said when he moved to the area in August 2022, he believed the facilities were being built.

He said: "A friend gave me a tour of the area in 2017, and back then the site only had a handful of houses. We're now past a thousand homes, and all we've got is a post box."

Mr Greef currently rents in the area with his wife and two children.

He described how other young families and their children were suffering.

He said: “There is currently one pre-school open, but it's at full capacity, and in September it's actually getting smaller.

"This year I've had nowhere for my youngest to go. There are a few schools, but families with younger kids, like myself, are suffering the most."

Despite the lack of facilities, Mr Green said there was an amazing sense of community in the town and that they had had street parties during Halloween.

Mr Greef isn’t the only person to voice their concerns over Northstowe.

Speaking to the BBC, Pamela Nally, 43, said: “To me, there's no heart to Northstowe, It's like building a home without a kitchen. A kitchen is a heart of a house. A shop and a cafe and that local area is the heart of a town.”

In a statement, the managing director of L&Q Estates, Adrian Clark, said: “We have been working hard to meet residents' expectations and deliver on our commitment to the community.

'While we recognise that there have been delays to our original timescales, work on this development has unfortunately coincided with the outbreak of the pandemic, followed by unprecedented economic and political challenges worldwide, which have inevitably impacted our work.”
