Thousands of students at top UK universities will not receive certificates at graduations this summer as union members continue to strike over furious pay disputes.

The ongoing University and College Union (UCU) marking boycott has seen members refusing to mark university exams and assessments, in a dispute over pay and working conditions.

This marking boycott could affect the grades of over half a million graduates this year.

Derived grades are based on the students previous scores they received for coursework and exams throughout the academic year.

If students at the Russell group University of Nottingham want their work to be marked, they can opt for a later graduation, and their certificates will be posted to them.

It has not been revealed by the university when this will be.

Edinburgh University’s graduation took place this week, with a video circulating on social media of students chanting “pay your workers”, to which the Vice Principal responded “settle down” and “keep it professional”.

The video got millions of views after being shared on the social media platform TikTok.

Around 2,000 students at the over £9,000 a year university are unable to graduate with a degree as they have not received their grades.

A spokesperson for Nottingham University told the MailOnline: “We are deeply sorry for the disruption the marking and assessment boycott has caused for the minority of students affected and recognise that this will cause concern and anxiety.

“We are doing everything we can to support our finalists to graduate and to ensure progress-ion for students who meet learning outcomes and professional requirements.”

In an open letter to the Universities and Colleges Employers Association, the National Union of Students said the ban "threatens to cause irreparable damage to the quality of degrees and the progression of returning students".
