The UK is a hotbed of beautiful seaside and countryside towns and villages with their unique charm and characters which draw people from landlocked cities for weekend breaks.

Some have cathedrals and abbeys which draw people in whilst others have stunning scenery on their doorsteps.

Other villages, like Milton Abbas, in Dorset, are unique because everything looks, well, exactly the same.

The village, not far from the popular seaside resort of Bournemouth, boasts a main street where every house looks idential.

And they are beautiful houses with lovely thatched roofs and a chocolate box feel.

Keith Johnson, 61, is the landlord of the Hambro Arms, a beautiful pub and bed and breakfast in the village.

He told the Express that Milton Abbas is a “lovely idyllic village” with “lots of thatched properties”.

He added: “It’s in a valley so there are quite steep backdrops to each of the properties. It's a lovely rural community. We are one of the hubs of the village.”

The houses with their thatched roofs may require more maintenance than traditional slate or brick buildings, but they add charm to the place.

Mr Johnson said Milton Abbas has a “chocolate box feel to it” and that it was its idyllic backdrop that attracted so many people to the village.

It is located between Blandford Forum and Dorchester in a valley.

The renowned landscape gardener Capability Brown reportedly worked on the design of Milton Abbas with famous architect William Chambers.

Together, these two shaped the village but it was Joseph Damer (the 1st Earl of Dorchester) who created the village as he felt the town of Dorchester was disturbing the rural peace.

According to Visit Dorset, he decided to build his own village. They said: “The owner of Milton Abbey House, Joseph Damer (1st Earl of Dorchester), felt the existing village of Middleton, with all its noises and smells was disturbing his rural idyll.

“So the new village of Milton Abbas was created with 36 almost identical cottages, each designed to house two families.”
