An Albanian-style migrant returns deal with Turkey is being promoted by Home Secretary Suella Braverman.

She is said to be concerned by a huge increase in the number of Turkish people crossing the Channel on small boats.

More than 1,000 asylum seekers have arrived since the start of this year, with an increase after the earthquake in February.

Immigration Minister Robert Jenrick is expected to fly to Turkey later this month to hold talks over a returns agreement that would mirror the deal with Albania.

Deportation flights there have increased since it signed an accord last December to “deter and disrupt illegal migration”.

A pact with Turkey could also see demands for tougher action on the production of dinghies.

The Daily Express, in an exclusive investigation, revealed how Turkey has become a hub for smugglers and the manufacture of

deadly dinghies used to cross the Channel.

Mrs Braverman is also concerned about an increase in illegal arrivals from India.

A source close to her said: “The Home Secretary is looking at how we can improve our agreements for returns with countries where we have high numbers of illegal arrivals – particularly this year. Turkey is a real concern as we’ve had a huge uptick in numbers.”

Meanwhile, ministers will today begin trying to prevent peers from watering down the Government’s flagship Illegal Migration Bill.
