A request from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex after the Queen's funeral to fly back to the United States of America with President Biden on his presidential plane was turned down for a specific reason.

The request was denied by officials at the White House in case it caused a “commotion”.

Sources told the Daily Mail, staff contacted US officials on behalf of the royal couple to ask for a favour.

It has been revealed that Prince Harry and Meghan were denied the request out of fear a gesture would “strain relations” between the US government and Buckingham Palace.

The Daily Mail source said: “It would have caused such a commotion. It would have strained relations with the Palace and the new King.”

Another source dismissed the idea as a “non-starter” and the question was raised as to who should pay for the trip.

The US government pays for officials to travel, while Mr Biden pays personally for family members and his party foots the bill for travel to campaign events. Laws around politicians giving and receiving perks of this kind can be very strict in the US, in particular if they can be seen as helping campaign prospects.

Sources also told the Daily Mail that the Sussexes later invited Jill Biden, the president's wife, to the Invictus Games but she turned down the offer due to her fears of sending the wrong message to the rest of the Royal Family.

Harry and Meghan were visiting the United Kingdom for charity engagements when the Queen died on September 8, 2022, and the couple stayed in the country through to her funeral on September 19.

The couple did not attend the pre-funeral reception at Buckingham Palace, as the palace described it as “for working members of the Royal Family.”

The couple, who visited the UK without their two children, Archie and Lilibet, flew home to the US soon after the funeral.
