       Red Wall Tory MPs will pressure Rishi Sunak to combine a dramatic expansion of apprenticeships and training into the party’s next general election manifesto.

       The New Conservatives group, largely made up of MPs elected in 2019, say more young people should be preparing for well-paid engineering jobs, rather than being pushed to attend university.

       Skills will be the subject of their next policy paper, due out in September, after they published a report this month calling for measures to cut immigration.

       A source said: “Many Red Wall kids will make a lot more money as engineers, electricians, gas fitters and so on than they would as a marketing executive.

       “We want to make sure every young person has the option to learn a trade and get a good job.”

       Leading members of the group include Danny Kruger, Devizes MP, Miriam Cates, MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge, Stoke North MP Jonathan Gullis and Lee Anderson, the Conservative Deputy Chair and MP for Ashfield.

       One member said: “This is about shaping the future direction of the party.”

       Another said: “New Conservatives are on the Right but they tend to be younger and from more urban areas.”
