       Edinburgh residents were left baffled after tiny double yellow lines were drawn on a residential road after the council installed a new cycling path.

       The hilariously small lines have left locals wondering why such a specific part of the road could not be parked on.

       Back in February 2022 construction started to create a west-east-cycle path around Melville Street and Manor Place, in an effort to improve cycling routes.

       With the roadworks completed the area has been transformed, with a one-way segregated cycleway on each side, adding a pavement and benches where the two roads meet.

       But a mere 12-inch stretch outside St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral on Manor Place has been branded with double yellow lines - even though there is otherwise plenty of space for permit holders to park, reports EdinburghLive.

       Residents' reactions have ranged from considering the weirdly specific signage to be "quite funny" to "ridiculous".

       Speaking about the tiny road markings, nearby resident Jamie said: "It's just bizarre. Before this very expensive cycle path was here it was a straight road, this whole area was double yellow lined.

       "I don't think the council got round to removing the old markings but it's just ridiculous."

       George Johnson, 79, who lives in the area, said: "It's quite funny, I suppose.

       "I was a lorry driver for years and had to follow the highway code. But nowadays, I've noticed no one follows the roads or cares about the road markings."

       George was sitting on the bench between Manor Place and Melville Street when a pickup truck drove straight across the new flagstones from Manor Place to Melville Street.

       He added: "These flagstones are made to take the weight of people and bikes, not 20 tons!"

       Express.co.uk has contacted City of Edinburgh Council for comment.

       It's not the first time the city's council has faced flak for its handling of yellow lines.

       In May a disgruntled Edinburgh resident said that Edinburgh City Council lacks common sense and the decency to consult residents after a botched double yellow line was applied in Corstorphine, reported EdinburghLive.

       Photos showed a car-sized gap in the middle of the lines with the resident claiming that the council had to miss out on a large area because they did not notify locals of the changes coming in.

       The local said: "It is obvious that a resident who had no idea of the changes has left their car there and the council workers have had to miss out a huge gap, it is embarrassing."

       He added: "I stay in the immediate vicinity and the place is just absolute chaos at the moment with nothing being done about it."

       Scott Arthur, the council's transport and environment convenor, said: "The changes the Council are making in the area are designed to make it easier and safer for people to make everyday journeys on foot. Indeed, several parents with children at the local school have told me they are delighted with the changes.

       "Every address is still accessible by vehicle, but the changes do make it harder for drivers from outside the community to cut through the area. I understand the yellow lines could not be completed due to a parked car, this will be addressed in the coming days."
