England's cheapest city has homes averaging £167,976 as house prices go down by an average of over £5,000.

Carlisle, a cathedral city in Cumbria, has some of the cheapest house prices across the whole of the UK, with some on the market currently being just £40,000.

The city, home to a historic centre with a castle, cathedral and semi-intact city walls, has homes priced well below the UK average.

Typical property value in the nation was £289,818 in January - meaning Carlisle sits £121,842 below this.

On the market at the moment is a two-bed end of terrace house located on Scaurbank Road for just £40,000.

Meanwhile, a two-bed flat located on Rydal Street is selling for £45,000.

Homes in Carlisle had gone down in price at the beginning of the year, with the average detached house being £284,154 compared to £294,995 in December.

And flats have gone down to just £88,889 from £92,023 - according to figures from the Land Registry.

But with mortgae rates on the rise, this could change as two-year fixed mortgage deals now have an interest rate of 6.66 percent.
