Six men have been found guilty of murder by a court over the Brussels terror attack which in March 2016 killed 32 people.

The trial, which took place seven years after the deadly attack, was carried out at the former NATO headquarters in Brussels and lasted seven months.

The jury took 19 days to deliberate the verdict, which saw the conviction of, among others, Salah Abdeslam.

Born and bred in Brussels, Abdeslam has already been convicted during a trial in France for his part in the terror attacks that killed 130 people in Paris in 2015.

While the French court had sentenced him to life behind bars without parole, it allowed the murderer to be taken to Belgium alongside four other people to face justice once again.

Abdeslam had been arrested during a police raid and shoot-out in his city in March 2016.

This prompted the terrorist group to change their existing plans and, rather than return to Paris to carry out more attacks in the French capital, they rushed to spark panic in the Belgian city.

Mohamed Abrini, also convicted by a court in France for his involvement in the November 2015 attacks, was among those found guilty on Tuesday too.

Following the terrorist attack, he became known as "the man in the hat" because he had been seen wearing one in a CCTV image taken at Brussels Airport shortly before the bombs were blown up.

The four other men found guilty of terrorist murder were Osama Krayem, Ali El Haddad Asufi, Bilal El Makhoukhi and Oussama Atar - who was tried in absentia as he is believed to have died in Syria.

The bombs detonated on March 22 2016 targeted Brussels Airport and, a few hours later, a metro train passing through the city's European quarter.

The attacks, the deadliest in Belgium since the end of World War 2, were claimed by ISIS.

More than 300 people were left injured, while 15 men and 17 women lost their lives at the hand of the terrorists.

Nearly 1,000 people were represented during the hearings, which provided Brussels and the relatives of the victims with some form of closure.
