Prince Harry and Meghan 'dividing' America as they are branded 'hypocrites and poseurs'

Meghan Markle's social media return discussed by expert

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are a polarising force in America and age is the dividing line, one royal biographer claims.

In an exclusive interview with Express US, Tom Bower, author of Revenge: Meghan, Harry and the War Between the Windsors, suggested it was the Sussexes decision to step down from royal duties in 2020 that pitted the young against the old.

Harry and Meghan framed their move to the states as a chance to escape the oppressive nature of royal life and pursue projects that advance underrepresented groups.

Young Americans are more sympathetic to this view than their older compatriots, Mr Bower claims.

He explained: "America's divided. Older people are clearly very critical of them and see them as hypocrites and poseurs."

The royal biographer continued: "But young people, especially among the diverse community, see them as champions of their causes, whether it's race, youth or women.

"And so I think they have a clearly divided attitude towards them."

Polling supports Bower's analysis. According to a poll conducted earlier this year for Variety, age does make a difference, but there are other factors at play too.

The outlet commissioned an exclusive poll that ran on Jan. 6 to 1,511 US adults aged 18 or over.

The data clearly indicated that Harry and Meghan resonate differently with Black and young adult respondents than they do with white and older ones.

While there was not an appreciable difference between Black and white Americans in terms of favourable opinions of the two (28 percent and 23 percent, respectively), there was a much greater level of unfavorability among white adults, with 38 percent saying so versus just eight percent of Black adults.

The 18-34s were more than twice as likely to be in their favor (36 percent) than not (15 percent); the inverse held true among those 55 or older (19 percent positive versus 34 percent negative).

Younger Americans were the only age group to have a net positive opinion of Harry and Meghan.

A poll conducted in March suggested Meghan has a slight edge over Harry in the popularity stakes.

The Duchess of Sussex was liked by 42 percent of US 18 to 24 year olds and disliked by 27 percent, giving her a net approval rating of +15.

And her popularity with this age group outstripped Harry's, though the Duke of Sussex is more popular overall, according to a representative sample of 1,500 American adults surveyed by Redfield & Wilton on May 17 on behalf of Newsweek.

Harry was liked by 38 percent of US 18 to 24 year olds and and disliked by 29 percent, giving him a net approval rating of plus nine, six points lower than Meghan's.
