A new "frigate factory" in Glasgow will enable shipbuildings to construct two ships simultaneously as engineers strive to meet new demands for the British navy.

The assembly hall is being constructed at BAE Systems' Govan yard on the River Clyde at a reported cost of £200million from the defence contractor.

The proposed ship building assembly hall will be 81 metres wide, 170 metres long and 49 metres high, enclosing 675,000 cubic metres of usable space.

Glasgow City Council granted planning permission for the construction in February, reports UK Defence Journal.

The new facility comes after the UK Government stated a commitment to an additional £5billion defence spending over the next two years.

The company said it "must" upgrade its existing shipbuilding capacity in order to meet the UK's future requirements.

Ships longer than 75 metres will be able to be built in the new factory under cover.

Building ships indoors protects them against the elements, and is part of an effort to modernise the yard to make it more attractive to future orders.

It is understood that Type 26 ships will be built in the facility - the primary role of which is anti-submarine warfare.

The additional Government funding of defence was in addition to £560mn of new investment made in autumn 2022.

It will be focused on replenishing stockpiles and improving the UK’s munitions infrastructure, as well as "the continued modernisation of the nuclear enterprise".

This increased funding was expected to raise UK spending on defence to 2.2 percent of GDP in 2023 (2.29 percent including support to Ukraine).

Announcing the initial plans for the building, a spokesperson for BAE Systems said: "The opportunity to provide a new modern ship building hall of this nature would allow BAE Systems to adopt improved shipbuilding techniques together with improved construction access and state of the art, dedicated, on-site office and amenities accommodation.

"It would also significantly improve ship building capability in Govan, which in turn will safeguard employment for the ship building and affiliated trades in the Glasgow city region and secure continued investment in training and education, in innovative technologies and in BAE Systems’ supply chain."

A kremlin-backed outlet recently claimed that Russia had successfully test parts of its next-generation "Poseidon" torpedo capable of carrying nuclear warheads and loaded on submarines.

Retired Russian military commander Yevgeny Buzhinsky had previously suggested the weapon would be used to attack the UK.
