A terrifying landslide in Switzerland has decimated buildings in a small hillside village.

Several buildings in Schwandenm, a village of 2,000 in Switzerland's Glarus Sud principality, were reduced to rubble after several days of rain dislodged earth and rock that fell hundreds of metres into the community.

No one was killed or injured following the natural disaster, but pictures have shown the shocking extent of the damage wrought on local buildings, with twisted wreckage seen jutting out from a deep blanket of soil.

Police have evacuated the village, with many homes still standing left bearing the dirt pile's weight.

Officials have warned that the debris continues to move, with fears mounting that the remaining buildings are at risk from another landslide.

Regional police told local reporters that the landslide struck the village at around 5.30pm on Tuesday, August 29, after rocks broke away from a nearby hillside.

The debris gathered momentum over 400 metres before striking several homes, which were unoccupied due to an evacuation order following a previous landslide on Sunday, August 20.

Locals recorded the natural disaster and posted footage on social media showing earth tearing through trees and vegetation before shattering several homes at the hill's base.

During investigations the following day, authorities found that three homes and two barns were completely levelled by the descending debris.

A small business was also among the buildings left heavily damaged, according to police.

The landslide warranted a response from commune officials, several fire brigades, civil protection, police and emergency services.

Police spokesman Richard Schmidt said local authorities would likely evacuate more people from the village.

In total, he expected up to 100 people needing to be relocated following the recent spate of landslides.

The previous incident had seen people evacuated from five households and two businesses, and they are yet to return to Schwandenm.

The landslide was prompted by several days of heavy rain in the region, and forecasts expect the inclement conditions will continue into next week, with showers and storms on the horizon.
