An Allen Park man fell victim to scammers who claimed to be selling antivirus protection for his computers.

       On Aug 22 the man told police that he received an email from someone purporting to work for a well-known antivirus company. The person informed him that his virus protection is due and that he has several laptops that need it.

       According to police, the scammers first asked the victim to get money cards, with the green dot on them. However, the victim gave the scammers his checking account information, thinking he was paying US$502 (RM2,339) for antivirus protection.

       However, he soon realised that they took out US$740 (RM3,448) from his account, not US$502 (RM2,339), for the supposed virus protection. The victim thought he was renewing a subscription for the antivirus service, but learned it was a scam.

       He told police that his wife works at the credit union where he had his checking account, so the couple transferred the money that was in his former account to another account.

       The scammers who claimed to work for the antivirus company gave the victim their names, which had no way of being verified. The resident told police he understands he will not get his money back, but wanted a report on file. – The News Herald, Southgate, Mich./Tribune News Service
