A male teenager was fatally shot after an altercation Monday afternoon near a busy commercial area of Northeast, D.C. police said. A man who tried to intervene was wounded.

The youth, whose name and age were not released, was shot about 4:30 p.m. in the 2300 block of Washington Place near the Rhode Island Avenue Metro station, the police said. He died at a hospital. The man was taken to a hospital with wounds that were not life-threatening.

The teenager was “a victim in an altercation” and shots were fired when the man tried to intervene, police said. The nature of the altercation could not be learned immediately. It was not clear whether weapons were shown during the dispute.

In part of the description of the alleged assailants, police said they were dressed all in black and wore masks. One had a handgun and all three fled in a black SUV, the police said.

The site was in a commercial area, just southeast of the Metro stop in the Brentwood area.

Police said the shots were heard by an officer on patrol, who immediately went to the scene.

Washington Place is a looping street, shaped something like the letter Q, with the tail intersecting Rhode Island Avenue.
