Queen Elizabeth reigned over Britain and the Commonwealth for over 70 years, and today marks the one-year anniversary of her death at age 96.

When people think of Queen Elizabeth’s extraordinary time on the throne, they may think of her sense of duty or commitment to the public through royal engagements.

However, Her Majesty has also been reported as having an incredible sense of humour and often managed to make those around her laugh even when she was at an important royal event.

Judi James, a body language and communication expert, explained: “Queen Elizabeth’s sense of humour and her love of performing managed to get lost in the mists of time as she became known primarily as a rather traditional monarch with a capacity for stoicism, protocol and service.

“But it is a side of the late Queen that is always shared in feedback from people who actually met her.”

Queen Elizabeth ruled for longer than any other Monarch in British history and managed to show some of her light-hearted personality with the public during her Jubilee celebrations to celebrate 70 years on the throne.

During the festivities, Her Majesty took was in a fun comedy sketch with another British icon, Paddington Bear in which they had afternoon tea.

In the comedy sketch, Paddington Bear drinks all the tea but then offers the Queen a marmalade sandwich, his signature snack. Queen Elizabeth joked that she always carried marmalade sandwiches around with her at all times in her handbag, “for later.”

Judi said: “It’s also a character trait that she shared with the nation during her Jubilee when she bequeathed that iconic film of herself with Paddington Bear to the nation.”

“It is a powerful and lasting memory of the Queen, joking along with the bear and sharing the fact that she keeps marmalade sandwiches in her handbag.”

After Her Majesty passed away, the public began leaving marmalade sandwiches and Paddington Bear teddies in parks near Buckingham Palace, and the amount caused the Royal Parks to ask mourners stop leaving sandwiches to honour the Queen.

However, Queen Elizabeth also showed the public her wicked sense of humour and managed to make Princess Kate laugh loudly, during a royal engagement in which she showed off her sword skills while cutting a cake.

Queen Elizabeth visited the Big Lunch which was part of the 2021 G7 summit in Cornwall and was organised by the charity Eden Project. The Queen was seen looking delighted to be offered a sword to cut the huge lunch cake with, and joked with both Kate and Camilla, now the Queen Consort, as she hacked away at the dessert.

Her Majesty managed to make Kate smile and the whole room laugh after she dryly said: “I don’t think it’s going to work” while trying to cut the cake with the huge sword.

After watching a video clip of the event, Judi explained that not only did this showcase Queen Elizabeth’s sense of humour but also revealed more about her relationship with Kate. Judi explained: “The bond between Queen and future Queen Kate looks deep and full of mutual understanding.

“Kate sidesteps Camilla’s nudges and stands urging the Queen on, completely confident that her grandmother-in-law knows exactly what she is doing and understands her sense of humour. The Queen is offered a normal knife but comments that the large sword would look more interesting.”

According to Judi this little moment showed that Kate fully understood Queen Elizabeth’s personality, and that the Princess of Wales would be able to mix humour with duty in the future.

Judi said: “Like many older people she knew exactly what she was doing and preferred no fussing and no help. Kate clearly understood this, making her the perfect heir to the Queen’s throne and crown at some time in the future.”
